Two-Alarm Fire Injures One - Destroys Two Family House At 314 Walnut Street
At 345 AM on October 13, 2019 MFD received a call from a single 911 caller, an occupant of the home called 911 to report that they had a fire in their home. Upon arrival by engine 5 from the Webster St. station, they encountered the 2 story, 2 family home fully ablaze on the south side and rear of the building. This crew made an immediate entry with a hose line into the first floor to search for trapped occupants.
They encountered high heat and zero visibility conditions as they searched the home for occupants. Additional crews arrived and advanced into the interior of the home to assist the search and to begin to extinguish the fire.
Simultaneously additional crews entered and evacuated the adjacent homes on both sides of the burning building as these two buildings were beginning to catch on fire.
One occupant of the fire building was driven to a local hospital to be evaluated for exposure to the smoke and fire.
One MFD Fire Fighter was injured, and had non life-threatening injuries
Electrical power lines were down on the ground in the alley upon arrival and were still live making a challenging situation more difficult. An efficient response by the Manchester fire crews is credited with safely evacuating the occupants and saving the 2 adjacent homes from significant damage. Each neighboring home sustained some damage but the residents were allowed to return to their homes at the incident’s conclusion. The fire home is a total loss, the occupants are being assisted with temporary housing by the red cross.
This fire required 2 alarms to bring under control. Seven engines, 3 ladders and 1 rescue company. Every fire station in the city with the exception of 2 stations responded to this fire.
Estimated dollar loss: $250,000.00
Fire Cause: The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
