HOOKSETT, NH - A tanker that caught fire near the intersection of Zapora Drive and Londonderry Turnpike sent smoke into the air Friday morning that could be seen for more than 10 miles away.
Hooksett Fire responded to a report of a vehicle fire in the yard of JP Noonan trucking at about 11 p.m. While en route they were updated that a tanker was on fire.
On arrival they had heavy fire in a tanker that was fortunately isolated from several other tankers which were on the lot.
Firefighters called for a second-alarm bringing tankers and engines from several departments to the scene and for station coverage.
The company advised that the tanker was partially filled with an asphalt product that caught fire while someone was working on the trailer.
Crews used water and then switched to foam to extinguish the fire.
The employees of the company were evaluated by EMS, and were not physically injured and did not require transport.
The SouthEastern New Hampshire Hazardous Materials Mutual Aid team was called to the scene to assist in mitigating any issues in the near by body of water. It was determined quickly based on the material and scope of the area that containment booms could be placed to prevent the product from spreading.
The fire was brought under control in about one hour, and mutual aid towns were released as the situation was brought under control.
Sources online indicate the placard on the truck is defined not a traditional placard, and must be displayed along with the "HOT" marking on bulk packaging and vehicles to inform carriers about the elevated temperature nature of the material and the need for additional safety precautions.
