MANCHESTER, NH - January 1, 2026 Manchester Fire, police and AMR responded to 567 Union Street for multiple reports of a structure fire in a four-story building Thursday at 12:36 a.m.
On arrival they had heavy fire from the front of the building, on the top floors with multiple people trapped.
Firefighters made entry into the building as well as police officers and attempted evacuations. Multiple people were located inside the building suffering from serious life-threatening injuries, and CPR was started on two victims one who later died.
One occupant jumped from a 2nd floor balcony, others were brought down by ground ladders as well as Truck 1 and 7’s aerial buckets in both the front and rear of the building.
The 2nd and 3rd alarms were struck quickly bringing additional resources to the scene to assist with rescue and fire control. There were multiple reports from MPD on scene of a child in a 4th floor bedroom, Truck 6 and T1 members were able to locate the child and remove them from the building and down the aerial device to awaiting EMS personnel.
All first arriving companies were in rescue mode, Rescue 1 removed multiple occupants from the structure while others advanced charged hose lines to assist with rescue operations. All areas of the building had been searched and cleared of all occupants multiple times by multiple companies.
9 victims were transported to local hospitals by police, private vehicles, AMR ambulances and mutual aid ambulances. One victim died, one is in critical condition, six remaining have various injuries but are expected to survive.
Several pets were rescued by firefighters and brought to safety or reunited with their owners.
The building had over 30 individual units, and over 40 people have been displaced. The American Red Cross is assisting residents of the building who were being temporarily sheltered at the First Baptist Church located at 536 Union St.
