This incident took place March 12 at an address on Canal Street. Companies were dispatched to a report of a rolled over excavator at a construction site.
Upon arrival the first companies, E11, Truck 1, R1 and Car 1 found an upside down excavator in a water filled ditch that was approximately 6 feet wide, 5 feet deep and 20 feet long inside a building under renovation.
The operator of the excavator was pinned under a 4000-pound excavator and was badly injured. Technical rescue operations were commenced bringing a full assignment of resources to assist with the operations.
Companies used various specialized tools and equipment to lift and stabilize the machine which allowed for removal of the patient. While rescue efforts were being conducted ALS members and AMR began patient care administering an IV and medications. The patient was extricated in 38 minutes.
There is no doubt that the efficient extrication and medical interventions by MFD and AMR made the difference between life and death. The operator of the machine has made a full recovery. For these actions all members involved are awarded the Chief’s Award of Excellence.
