Merrimack Fire Rescue Firefighter Keith Hines and Firefighter Zachary McComb were awarded with a NH Fire and Emergency Medical Services award at the annual Fire & EMS awards presentation.
On August 18, 2025, at approximately 3:30 PM, Merrimack Fire Rescue Ambulance 1—staffed by Paramedic Zachary McComb and AEMT Keith Hines were traveling on the F.E. Everett Turnpike while returning from the hospital when they came upon a multi-vehicle motor vehicle collision with significant damage.
One vehicle had sustained heavy front-end damage, including extensive damage to the windshield. Recognizing the severity of the incident, the crew immediately notified Merrimack Dispatch and requested assistance from Nashua Fire Rescue due to the presence of a critical patient.
Upon initial assessment, the patient was found in a compromised position across the vehicle, with his head in the passenger seat and his feet on the steering wheel. The patient was confused, asking repetitive questions, and presented with pale, gray skin—signs indicative of a potentially life-threatening condition.
Through the rapid response and decisive actions of the Ambulance 1 crew, and with the assistance of Nashua Fire Rescue, the patient was safely extricated from the vehicle. The patient was then transported to St. Joseph Hospital Emergency Department under a Trauma Alert.
The prompt recognition, coordination, and professionalism demonstrated by all personnel on scene played a critical role in the patient’s outcome. Excellent work by all involved.
