Honor, Unity, and Remembrance: New Hampshire Marks 34th Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony
Beneath a quiet spring canopy on the State House grounds, the Granite State paused today, May 22, 2026, for the 34th Annual New Hampshire Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony. Law enforcement personnel, state leaders, and families gathered to honor the dozens of officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty since 1886.
The solemn event took place surrounding "The Eternal Shield" monument at 33 North State Street. Designed by local sculptor Emile Birch and dedicated in 1995, the stunning five-pointed star structure is crafted from New Hampshire granite to symbolize the protective shield of law enforcement. At its center, a gold-leafed bronze flame burns eternally, surrounded by the official agency badges of every department across the state.
The ceremony featured traditional honors, including a multi-agency color guard presentation, a roll call of the fallen, and the mournful echo of "Taps."
Organized by the state's Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial Association as a capstone to National Police Week, the gathering ensures the names carved into the stone sanctuary walls are never forgotten. It remains a poignant reminder of the true cost of public safety and a grateful state’s enduring promise to support its survivors.
