Fire Quickly Knocked Down By Sprinkler System After Possible E-Bike Fire

An automatic sprinkler system successfully contained a residential fire Sunday morning after a blaze broke out inside a Families in Transition building on Amherst Street.

Manchester Fire crews dispatched to 370 Amherst St. just before 10 a.m. following reports of a structure fire. Firefighters arrived to find smoke pouring from the third floor of the facility. Crews quickly positioned Truck 1 in the tight street space outside and stretched hose lines into the building.

While search and rescue teams evacuated residents, firefighters made their way to the third-floor apartment to check for fire extension and overhaul burnt items.

The building's fire suppression system played a critical role in preventing a larger disaster. A single sprinkler head in the unit where the fire began activated automatically, knocking down the vast majority of the flames before firefighters arrived. Once the scene was fully suppressed, crews shut off the sprinkler system and placed salvage tarps in the unit below to mitigate water damage.

American Medical Response (AMR) paramedics evaluated several residents at the scene, but no injuries were reported and no one required transport to the hospital.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Manchester Fire Marshal’s Office. Preliminary findings suggest the fire originated from an e-bike located inside the apartment.

Families in Transition is actively assisting the displaced tenant to provide temporary housing arrangements while damage assessments continue.
